Comment on So you want to start reading Warhammer 40,000? Here’s where to start! by Carter https://fanfiaddict.com/so-you-want-to-start-reading-warhammer-40000-heres-where-to-start/#comment-3740 Sun, 05 Jan 2025 05:42:14 +0000 https://fanfiaddict.com/?p=47868#comment-3740 Re: Horus Heresy. You say, “I’d also say it’s probably not the best place to start your journey.” I wholeheartedly disagree. I’m someone with no real prior knowledge of Warhammer. I picked up Fire Warrior because I like the author, Si Spurrier. I had absolutely no idea what the Imperium was or why there was a conflict. I did not enjoy it and swore I would never read any more Warhammer. A few months later, a friend recommended the Horus Heresy stuff, explaining that it was “30K” and that I could read the first few and then skip around. “Great!” I thought. “I don’t feel like reading all 60+ books.”

Fast forward several months and I’m now on book 27, reading them all in publication order (short stories and Primarchs series, too) and absolutely loving it. Each book focuses on a different aspect of the conflict, whether it be a pivotal battle or the evolution of a major character, so it never feels stale or superfluous. The gradual introduction of legions or other concepts makes me feel like the world-building is happening as I’m reading, and not that I’m being dumped straight into a mess of stuff.

I’ve read almost all of those and really enjoyed them, especially The First Necromancer! But I got a couple new ones to add to the list, so thanks!

Absolutely. That ending — I reread it a couple of times to let it sink in. Loved that last chapter

The story, characters, and visuals are so compelling—it would be amazing to experience them in a whole new format!
